Vallauris / Jerome Massier Ceramic Braided Fruitbowl Dark Green

The Ceramic Collection brings together selected objects from European ceramic history, chosen for their material character, craftsmanship and distinct typologies.

Vallauris, on the Côte d’Azur in the South of France, has a long tradition of ceramic production. During the twentieth century, the town became an important centre for artists and ceramicists, with workshops producing objects that combined traditional craftsmanship with highly individual forms.

This braided fruitbowl was designed by Jerome Massier and handmade in Vallauris in the 1950s. Its distinctive construction transforms the familiar fruit bowl into an open, sculptural form. The heavy ceramic braid creates a structure that both contains and reveals, making the object as much about presenting its contents as holding them.

The oval bowl is finished in a deep dark green glaze, which accentuates the rhythm and depth of the braided surface. The open construction allows light to move through the object, emphasizing the contrast between the substantial ceramic material and the spaces created by the braid.

The Jerome Massier braided fruitbowls were produced in several shapes and glazes, including oval, round and tall versions. Each reflects the ceramic traditions and craftsmanship associated with Vallauris.

This is an original vintage piece from the 1950s and is stamped Jerome Massier Vallauris (AM).
