Potato Marble Fruit

Marble Fruit Series — Potato

The Marble Fruit Series by Trine Guldager for Autumn Cph explores the transformation of familiar, everyday forms through material and craft. The potato occupies a particular place within the series: rather than being carved into shape, each piece begins as a naturally eroded Carrara marble stone, collected from the riverbeds around Pietrasanta and selected for its resemblance to the familiar form.

The stones are subsequently hand-painted with natural pigments in collaboration with a fifth-generation marble workshop in Pietrasanta, drawing on the visual language and techniques of Italian still-life painting.

As one of the world’s most fundamental food crops, the potato carries associations of sustenance, resilience and survival. Its history connects cultivation, migration and exchange, while its modest appearance stands in contrast to its extraordinary cultural and economic significance.

Translated into marble, the ordinary becomes permanent. Each potato retains the irregularities created by geological time and the movement of water, making every piece unique.
