Marble Fruit Series — Grapefruit

The Marble Fruit Series by Trine Guldager for Autumn Cph explores the transformation of familiar, everyday forms through material and craft. Each grapefruit is made from Carrara marble in collaboration with a fifth-generation marble workshop in Pietrasanta, Italy, and painted by hand with natural pigments.

The grapefruit emerged as a distinct citrus fruit in the Caribbean in the eighteenth century, originating from a natural crossing between the sweet orange and pomelo. Its history reflects the movement and cultivation of plants across continents, and the transformation of botanical species through changing landscapes and cultures.

Translated into marble, the fruit’s temporary organic form becomes permanent. Variations in shape, colour and surface are retained as part of the making process, so no two pieces are identical.
